In a subdued trading session ahead of the Christmas holiday, T-Notes experienced mild pressure, primarily influenced by movements in Japanese Government Bonds (JGBs). The US Treasury's recent auction of 2-year notes highlighted weaker demand, with the auction tailing the when-issued yield by 0.3 basis points. This was the largest tail since April and marked the fourth tail in 2025, indicating a softer appetite for these securities. The bid-to-cover ratio also declined to 2.54x, compared to the previous 2.68x and the six-auction average of 2.61x.

The auction's breakdown revealed an increase in direct demand to 34.1%, offsetting a drop in indirect demand to 53.2%. Dealers were left with 12.7% of the auction, slightly above the prior and average levels. Despite the softer auction, there was little immediate impact on prices, as the market remained largely unphased.

In terms of monetary policy, Fed Governor Miran's comments on Bloomberg TV suggested a dovish stance, indicating that there is still room to go before reaching the neutral rate. He mentioned the possibility of dissenting in favour of a 25 basis point reduction if the Committee decides to hold rates steady. However, T-Notes traded sideways following his remarks, showing limited reaction.

Market participants are also adjusting their expectations for future Fed rate cuts. The implied pricing for rate cuts in January, March, and December saw slight adjustments, reflecting ongoing market sentiment and economic data considerations. The Effective Federal Funds Rate (EFFR) and Secured Overnight Financing Rate (SOFR) remained stable, with volumes showing minor fluctuations.

Looking ahead, the market is anticipating key economic data releases, including quarterly GDP, PCE data, Industrial Production, and Consumer Confidence, which are expected to provide further insights into the economic outlook. Additionally, the upcoming auctions of 5-year and 7-year notes will be closely monitored for demand signals.
