However, the focus is shifting towards the central bank's guidance and rhetoric, as traders seek clues on the timing of future rate adjustments.

Recent reports suggest that some BoJ policymakers are contemplating the possibility of raising rates sooner than the market anticipates, driven by concerns over the persistent weakness of the Japanese Yen. The Yen's depreciation has heightened inflationary pressures, particularly in sectors beyond food and energy, as companies continue to pass on higher costs to consumers. This situation has led to speculation that the BoJ might consider a rate hike as early as April if the Yen's weakness persists.

Governor Ueda has previously advocated for a cautious approach, but the ongoing currency depreciation could compel the BoJ to act more swiftly to manage inflation. Analysts at Citigroup have highlighted the risk of multiple rate hikes this year if the Yen continues to weaken, suggesting that a USD/JPY level above 160.00 could trigger a 25 basis point increase in the overnight call rate to 1.00% in April.

The BoJ's quarterly "Outlook for Economic Activity and Prices" report, released after specific Monetary Policy Meetings, is expected to retain the same inflation outlook as the previous report. However, a recent Reuters source report indicates that the BoJ may revise its economic growth and inflation forecasts for FY26 upwards.

Adding complexity to the outlook is Japan's snap election, called by Prime Minister Takaichi. This political development raises the potential for a clash between gradual monetary tightening and looser fiscal policy. Goldman Sachs has warned that a stronger mandate for fiscal expansion could increase JGB term premia, tighten financial conditions, and exacerbate Yen volatility, potentially pressuring the BoJ to adjust its policy sooner than planned.

The timing of the BoJ's announcement on Friday remains uncertain, typically occurring after the start of the Tokyo lunch break. Any delay in the announcement could lead to market speculation about extended deliberations. Beyond the rate decision, traders will scrutinise the policy statement and Governor Ueda’s press conference for any shifts in language regarding the Yen, inflation risks, or the timing of the next rate hike.
